Ingredients

  • 1 qt. sweet apple cider or apple juice
  • 8 lb. tart, ripe apples (Granny Smith, McIntosh or Winesap)
  • sugar (light brown or white)
  • ground cinnamon
  • ground allspice
  • ground cloves

Directions

  1. 1
    Wash, core and quarter apples.
  2. 2
Cover and cook apples and cider in a large crock-pot on low setting for 8 to 10 hours (or high setting for 2 to 3 hours) until apples are very tender. Process apples and liquid through food mill to remove apple peel. Measure and return processed apples to crock-pot.

  4. 4
Cook on high setting for 6 to 8 hours.
  5. 5
    Stir every 2 hours.
  6. 6
Remove cover after 2 hours to allow fruit to cook down.
  7. 7
Pour hot apple butter into hot, sterilized canning jars.
  8. 8
Seal at once and process in boiling water bath.
