- 1 1/2 cups flour, all-purpose
- 1/2 cup wheat germ toasted
- 3 tablespoons sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 small apples chopped
- 1/4 cup cheddar cheese shredded
- 1 large egg whites
- 1/2 cup milk lowfat 1%
Directions

1Preheat oven to 400 degrees; grease an 8-inch round cake pan.

2In a medium bowl, combine the flour, wheat germ, sugar, baking powder and salt.

3With 2 knives or a pastry blender, cut in the butter until the size of coarse crumbs.

4Toss the chopped apple and cheese in the flour mixture.

5Beat together the egg white and milk until well combined.

6Add to the flour mixture, mixing with a fork until a dough forms.

7Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead 6 times.

8Spread the dough evenly in the cake pan and score deeply with a knife into 6 wedges.

9Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the top springs back when gently pressed.

10Let stand for 5 minutes; remove from the pan.
