Ingredients

  • vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 2 1/4 c. sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp. ground cloves
  • 10x powdered sugar (optional)
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 c. granulated sugar
  • 1/4 c. firmly packed light brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 Tbsp. vegetable oil
  • 1/4 c. milk
  • 1 c. unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract

Directions

    Fill a large heavy saucepan or electric skillet 2/3 full with vegetable oil.

    Heat to 360° on a deep fat frying thermometer. Sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and salt onto a piece of wax paper.

    Beat together the granulated sugar, brown sugar and eggs in large bowl with an electric mixer at medium speed until light and fluffy.

    Beat in 2 tablespoons oil.

    Stir in flour mixture alternately with the milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients.

    Stir in the applesauce and vanilla.
