Australian Damper "Out-Back" Bread

  • 1 Tbsp. butter or lard
  • 1 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 2 1/2 c. plain flour
  • 2 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • pinch of salt

Directions

    Beat butter and sugar until creamy; add egg and beat again. Then, add milk alternately with flour (to which salt, cream of tartar and soda have been added).

    Turn out on a well-floured board.

    Knead and shape into 2 pones and place on well-greased baking pans.

    Brush tops with melted butter.

    Bake at 350° until top is browned.
