Basic Butter Cookie Dough

- 1 1/2 c. butter or margarine, softened
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 c. granulated sugar
- 2 tsp. vanilla extract
- 4 1/2 c. flour
Directions

1In a large bowl with electric mixer beat butter, sugar, egg, vanilla and salt until light and fluffy.

2Gradually add flour; beat until well mixed.

3Cover dough.

4Chill 1 hour or place in freezer 30 minutes.

5Work with 1/4 dough at a time (keep remaining dough chilled).

6Roll out 1/4-inch thick between sheets of wax paper.

7Cut or mold dough into desired shapes.

8Repeat with remaining dough.

9Preheat oven to 375°.

10Place cookies on ungreased baking sheets.

11Bake 8 to 10 minutes until cookies are lightly browned.

12Remove to rack.

13Cool completely.

14Makes 4 to 6 dozen cookies.
