Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 c. flour
  • 1 3/4 c. sugar
  • 1 1/4 tsp. soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. baking powder
  • 2/3 c. soft margarine
  • 4 (1 oz.) sq. Baker's unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled
  • 1 1/4 c. water
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 3 eggs

Directions

    Heat oven to 350°.

    Brush sides of bottom of four 9-inch round layer pans with soft margarine.

    Bake only 2 layers at a time.

    Measure into large mixing bowl, flour, sugar, soda, salt, baking powder, margarine and chocolate.

    Add water and vanilla. Beat at low speed to blend, and then beat 2 minutes at medium speed, scraping sides and bottom of bowl frequently.

    Add eggs; beat 2 more minutes.

    Pour 1/4 of batter (about 1 c.) into each pan.

    Layers will be thin. Bake 15 to 18 minutes, or until done. Cool slightly and remove from pan. Cool thoroughly.
