- 1/2 c. butter, softened
- 1/2 c. Crisco
- 2 c. sugar
- 5 eggs, separated
- 1 c. buttermilk
- 1 tsp. soda
- 2 c. all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 c. chopped black walnuts
- 1 (3 to 4 oz.) can coconut
- 1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
Directions

1Cream butter and Crisco.

2Gradually add sugar, beating well on medium speed of electric mixer.

3Add eggs yolks, one at a time, beating well after each addition.

4Combine buttermilk and soda. Stir until soda dissolves.

5Add flour to butter mixture alternately with buttermilk mixture, beginning and ending with flour.

6Mix well after each addition.

7Stir in vanilla, walnuts and coconut, stirring well.

8Beat egg whites (at room temperature) with cream of tartar until soft peaks form.

9Fold gently into batter.
