  • 6 wide-mouth, pint canning jars, with rims and new lids*
  • 2 2/3 c. sugar
  • 2/3 c. vegetable shortening
  • 4 eggs
  • 2/3 c. water
  • 2 c. fruit**
  • 3 1/2 c. flour
  • 1/4 t. ground cloves
  • 1 t. cinnamon
  • 1 t. baking powder
  • 2 t. baking soda
  • 1 t. salt
  • 2/3 to 1 c. raisins or nuts, dredged in some flour (optional)

Directions

    Preheat oven to 325°. Wrap a strip of foil around the rim of the jars. Grease inside of jars, but not the rim, set aside.
