- 2 tablespoons butter
- 5 apples
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 egg, beaten
- 2 1/2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon clove
- 1 cup water, hot
- 3/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup nuts, chopped
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 cup light molasses
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon ginger
- 1 teaspoon salt
Directions

1Coat an 8x12x2-inch pan with the 2 tablespoons of butter.

2Sprinkle the brown sugar evenly over the butter.

3Peel, core and slice apples.

4Arrange apples slices over the sugar mixture.

5Sprinkle nuts over all.

6Place pan on the bottom shelf of oven and let apples cook while mixing the other ingredients.

7Cream together butter and sugar, add egg and molasses and mix well.

8Sift dry ingredients and stir in to creamed mixture.

9Put in hot water and mix to a thin batter.

10Remove pan from oven and pour batter over apples.

11Return to oven and bake for 35 minutes.

12Remove from oven and loosen cake around edges.

13Let stand five minutes and turn out on to serving tray.
