Brown Oatmeal Rolls

  • 2 c. boiling water
  • 1 c. rolled oats
  • 3 Tbsp. shortening
  • 1 pkg. yeast
  • 2/3 c. brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/3 c. lukewarm water
  • 5 to 5 1/2 c. flour

Directions

    Pour boiling water over oats; cool to lukewarm.

    Add shortening and yeast, softened in the lukewarm water.

    Add brown sugar and salt and beat in enough flour to knead.

    Knead about 10 minutes.

    Let rise until double; punch down and make rolls or bread and let rise again.

    Bake at 375° for 20 to 25 minutes for rolls; 350° for 50 to 60 minutes for bread.
