- 1 yeast cake
- 1/2 c. lukewarm water
- 1/4 c. sugar
- 1 c. buttermilk
- 4 or 5 c. flour
- 1/4 c. shortening
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 egg
- 1/2 tsp. soda
Directions

1Dissolve yeast in lukewarm water.

2Heat buttermilk to lukewarm.

3Add the salt, shortening and sugar to the buttermilk. Add the dissolved yeast, a cup of the flour with the soda and the egg.

4Beat vigorously.

5Beat and fold in the remaining flour until a soft dough.

6Fold lightly (about 5 minutes).

7Place in a clean lightly greased bowl.

8Cover and let rise 45 minutes to 1 hour until double in bulk.

9Shape into desired rolls.

10Bake in a 350° to 375° oven for 20 to 25 minutes.
