  • 1 German chocolate cake mix
  • 3/4 c. oleo, softened
  • 1 pkg. (6 oz.) chocolate bits
  • 2/3 c. evaporated milk
  • 1 pkg. (14 oz.) caramels
  • 1 pkg. pecans or walnuts

Directions

    Mix cake mix with 1/3 cup evaporated milk and oleo.

    The dough will be stiff.

    Melt unwrapped caramels with other 1/3 cup milk until smooth.

    Spread half of batter in rectangle baking pan with fingers in a greased pan.

    Bake at 350° for 6 minutes.

    Remove from oven, sprinkle chocolate chips over baked batter and pour melted caramel over that layer.

    Add nuts.

    Drop remaining batter on this. It will look strange.

    Bake for 15 to 18 minutes.

    No longer! Dough may not look done, but that's due to the melted caramels. Let it cool for a few minutes and then loosen around pan edges. Wait about an hour before cutting into squares.
