Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 3/4 c. milk
  • 1 stick butter
  • 1 egg, slightly beaten
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • pinch of soda (add to boiling mixture before adding sugar to prevent foaming)

Directions

    Place 1/2 cup sugar in iron skillet over low heat.

    Mix in saucepan 2 cups sugar, milk, butter and egg.

    Stir this mixture over low heat until butter melts.

    Increase heat and cook until it boils rapidly.

    When sugar in skillet is brown, pour it into the other boiling mixture, stirring fast and constantly.

    Cook to soft-ball stage.

    Add vanilla.

    Boil to spreading consistency. Filling may be put on when thinner to soak into cake.
