  • 1 1/2 c. applesauce
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 2 1/2 c. sifted plain flour
  • 1/2 tsp. each: cinnamon, cloves and allspice
  • 1 c. raisins
  • 1 c. walnuts
  • 1/2 c. boiling water
  • 1/4 to 1/2 c. candied fruit
  • 1 egg
  • 1 c. shortening
  • 2 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • candied pineapple rings, cherries and pecan halves to decorate top

    Cream shortening.

    Add sugar gradually.

    Add well beaten egg and applesauce (Use a little of the flour to dredge fruit and nuts).

    Sift remaining flour mixture alternately with the water to the creamed mixture.

    Add flour, raisins and nuts.
