Ingredients

  • 3 c. Swans Down flour
  • 3 c. sugar
  • 1 1/2 c. whipped butter
  • 1/2 c. Crisco
  • 5 eggs
  • 1 c. milk
  • 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 Tbsp. vanilla
  • 2 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. white Karo syrup
  • 1/2 c. water
  • 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 c. nuts
  • 2 egg whites
  • 1 large bottle cherries

Directions

    Mix first eight ingredients and bake at 350° until done; makes 5 layers.

    Cook sugar, syrup, water and salt until it will spin a good thread.

    Pour half of mixture over stiffly beaten egg whites to which baking powder has been added.

    Beat until mixture loses its gloss.

    Add remaining syrup mixture and again.

    Add chopped nuts, vanilla and cherries.

    Mix and spread on cake layers.
