Ingredients

  • 1 c. boiling water
  • 1 c. chopped dates
  • 1 3/4 c. sifted flour
  • 1/4 c. cocoa
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 c. shortening (margarine)
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/2 c. chopped nuts
  • 1 c. chocolate chips

    Pour boiling water over chopped dates.

    Let cool.

    In separate bowl, cream shortening and sugar; add eggs and vanilla and beat well.

    Sift dry ingredients together and add to creamed mixture alternately with date mixture; blend well.

    Pour batter into greased 15 x 10 x 1-inch pan.

    Sprinkle chopped nuts and chocolate chips over batter.

    Press lightly into batter.

    Bake in moderate oven, 350°, for 25 to 30 minutes.

    Cool and cut into bars.
