  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 1/4 c. sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 c. water
  • 2 sq. chocolate, melted
  • 1 3/4 c. flour
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 cap vanilla

    Cream sugar and shortening; add eggs.

    Mix water and flour, alternating.

    In the last amount of flour, add soda and baking powder and a pinch of salt.

    Chocolate should be mixed in last. Mix well and add a capful of vanilla.

    Bake at 350° for 40 minutes in a 13 x 9-inch pan or about 25 to 35 minutes for layer cake.
