Ingredients
- 1 c. vegetable shortening (I use Crisco)
- 3 c. sugar
- 3 c. all-purpose flour (sift 3 times)
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 stick butter or margarine
- 6 eggs, separated
- 1/2 tsp. baking powder
- 1 c. buttermilk
- 1/4 c. cocoa
Directions

1Have all ingredients at room temperature.

2Cream shortening and butter.

3Add sugar and beat at medium speed for 5 minutes.

4Add egg yolks and beat until the yolks disappear.

5Stir flour, baking powder, salt and cocoa together.

6Add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour.

7Add vanilla.

8Fold in the beaten egg whites.

9Pour into a 10-inch tube pan that has been greased and floured.

10Bake at 325° for 1 hour and 15 minutes.

11Let cool in pan for 30 minutes.

12Remove from pan.

13May be iced with your favorite chocolate icing.
