Chocolate River Bars

- 1/2 c. butter or margarine (1 stick)
- 1/2 c. packed brown sugar
- 1/4 c. sugar
- 1 egg
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla or almond extract
- 1 1/4 c. all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 (6 oz.) pkg. (1 c.) semi-sweet chocolate pieces
Directions

1Turn oven to 350°.

2Grease a 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking pan.

3In a large mixer bowl, beat butter or margarine with electric mixer on medium speed until softened (about 30 seconds).

4Add brown sugar and sugar and beat until fluffy.

5Add egg and extract.

6Beat well.

7In a medium mixing bowl, stir together flour, baking soda and salt.

8With mixer on low speed, gradually add flour mixture to butter mixture, beating until well mixed.

9Spread batter in the greased baking pan.

10Sprinkle chocolate pieces evenly over top of batter.

11Place in the 350° oven about 2 minutes or just until chocolate pieces soften.

12Remove pan from oven.

13With a table knife, swirl the melted chocolate pieces into the batter.

14Return the pan to the 350° oven.

15Bake 12 to 15 minutes more or until golden.

16Cool in pan on cooling rack.

17Cut into bars.

18Makes 32 bars.
