- 1/4 cup melted shortening or vegetable oil, plus more for pans
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup yellow cornmeal
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1/2 cup milk
Directions

1Preheat the oven to 450F.

2Grease cast iron corn stick pans.

3Sift together the flour, cornmeal, baking powder, salt, and sugar.

4Add the egg, milk, and melted shortening or oil, stirring until just blended.

5Mix only enough to dampen the cornmeal mixture.

6Heat the greased corn stick pans in the oven for 20 minutes.

7Pour in the batter and bake for about 30 minutes or until done and beautifully brown.

8Pierce 1 corn stick with a toothpick.

9If toothpick comes out clean, the bread is done.
