Creamy Bean Chowder

  • 1 lb. pea or navy beans
  • 1 1/2 qt. boiling water
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 3 tsp. butter
  • 2 1/2 c. (1 lb. 3 oz. can) tomatoes with juice
  • 3 c. milk
  • 1 1/4 lb. smoked ham hocks or meaty ham bone
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper
  • 3/4 c. minced onion

    Wash and clean beans. Cover with cold water and soak overnight.

    Drain.

    Place beans in kettle with boiling water, ham bone, salt and pepper.

    Heat to boiling.

    Reduce heat and simmer 2 1/2 hours.

    Remove from heat.
