- 2 c. sugar
- c. shortening
- 1 tsp. cream of tartar
- 1 tsp. soda
- 1 c. buttermilk or sour milk
- 3 eggs
Directions

1Combine flour, sugar and shortening; take out 1 cup for topping.

2Add remaining ingredients to the larger portion of the dry mixture and beat together well.

3Pour batter into 2 (9-inch) round pans or 1 (13 x 9-inch) pan.

4Sprinkle reserved 1 cup of topping over batter in pan(s).

5Bake cake in a 350° oven for 45 to 50 minutes.

6It may take less time to bake the cakes in the 9-inch pans, so keep an eye on the 9-inch cakes while you are baking them.
