  • 9 inch Pie Shell
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon shortening
  • 2 or 3 tablespoons cold water
  • Measure flour and slat into bowl. Cut-in shortening. Sprinkle water on mixture while tossing with fork. Roll dough on floured pastry cloth to 2 inches larger than 9 inch pie pan.
  • Apple Filling:
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 6 cups thinly peeled and sliced tart apples.
  • Stir together dry ingredients. Mix with apples. Make topping and place on pie. Put pie on cookie sheet to catch drips.
  • Crumb Topping:
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup firm margarine
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • Put flour and sugar in bowl. Cut in margarine until mixture is crumbly.

    Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Bake for 50 minutes. Cover pie with foil after 40 minutes.
