Ingredients
- 3/4 c. chopped nuts
- 1 c. chopped dates
- 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/4 c. shortening
- 3/4 c. boiling water
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla
- 1 c. sugar
- 1 1/2 c. sifted all-purpose flour
Directions

1Combine nuts, dates, soda and salt in a mixing bowl.

2Add shortening and boiling water.

3Allow this mixture to stand for 15 minutes.

4Stir to blend.

5In a separate bowl, beat the eggs slightly and add vanilla.

6Stir in sugar and flour.

7Add to date mixture.

8Do not overmix.

9Place in a greased 9 x 5 x 3-inch loaf pan.

10Bake for 1 hour in 350° (moderate) oven.

11When done, toothpick inserted in the center will come out clean.

12Cool before removing.

13Loosen sides with a spatula.

14For perfect slicing, allow the loaf to cool several hours.
