- 1 cup pitted dates, chopped
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 4 tbsp (1/2 stick) butter, chopped
- 2 cups self-rising flour
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 cup walnuts, chopped
- 1 None egg, lightly beaten
- None None Butter, honey, to serve
Directions

1Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lightly grease two 8 x 3 inch loaf pans.

2Combine dates, sugar, 1 cup water and butter in a small saucepan on low heat. Stir 1-2 mins without boiling, until sugar is dissolved. Bring to a boil on high heat. Transfer to a large bowl. Let stand 10 mins to cool slightly.

3Sift flour and soda into a medium bowl. Stir into date mixture with nuts and egg. Divide evenly among prepared pans. Cover tightly with 2 layers foil.

4Bake 25-30 mins. Cool in pan 10 mins. Remove from pan; cool completely on wire rack. Serve loaves sliced with butter and honey.
