  • 2 pkg. cut dates
  • 2 c. nuts
  • 2 c. boiling water
  • 2 c. shortening
  • 4 c. cake flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 level tsp. soda
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/2 c. brown sugar

Directions

    Pour boiling water over dates and nuts.

    Let them stand until cool.

    Mix shortening and sugar.

    Add the eggs, without heating. Sift salt with flour.

    Now add soda to dates and nuts.

    Add alternately to the sugar mixture with flour.

    Lastly, stir in 2 to 3 cups cold water.

    Bake in two loaf pans at 350° for about 45 minutes.
