- 5 eggs
- 2 1/2 c. sugar
- 2 1/2 c. cake flour
- 1 1/2 tsp. soda
- 1 tsp. baking powder
- 1 c. butter, softened
- 1 c. buttermilk
- 5 Tbsp. cocoa
Directions

1Dissolve soda in buttermilk.

2Cream sugar and butter and then beat in egg yolks, one at a time.

3In a small bowl, beat egg whites until stiff; set aside.

4Sift flour, cocoa and baking powder together.

5Add alternately with buttermilk in the first mixture. Fold in egg whites.

6Pour into 5 greased and floured 8 or 9-inch pans.

7Bake at 350° for 25 minutes or until done.

8Cool.

9Frost with Chocolate Icing.
