  • 4 c. sifted flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 3 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 c. milk
  • 2 Tbsp. shortening
  • 1 tsp. vanilla

Directions

    Sift together flour, salt, baking powder and nutmeg; add sugar. Mix to a light soft dough with beaten egg, milk, melted shortening and vanilla.

    Turn onto floured board; roll 1/2-inch thick.

    Cut with doughnut cutter and cook about 3 minutes in deep, hot fat (360° to 375°), turning as they rise to top of fat.

    Drain on paper and sprinkle with powdered sugar.

    Makes 3 dozen.
