- 1 lb. dry pinto beans or black beans
- 8 c. water
- 2/3 c. picante sauce
- 1/4 c. finely chopped onion
- 1 Tbsp. salt
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1/4 c. butter or margarine (optional)
Directions

1Sort through and discard any foreign material.

2Thoroughly wash and drain beans.

3Combine beans, water, 1/3 cup of picante sauce, onion, salt and garlic in a Dutch oven.

4Bring to a boil, reduce heat and cover; simmer 3 to 4 hours or until beans are tender and mash easily.

5Stir occasionally.

6Drain beans, reserving liquid.

7Return beans to Dutch oven or large mixing bowl.

8Add butter and remaining picante sauce.

9Beat at low speed with mixer, adding liquid as necessary, until desired consistency.
