Ingredients

  • 1/2 clove garlic, cut in half
  • 1/3 cup white wine
  • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 cups combination of grated gruyere and swiss cheese (about 8 oz)
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1 large apple, 2 carrots, and 4 oz French bread, cut in bite-size pieces

    Prep time: 10 minutes

    Cooking time: About 5 minutes

    Rub inside of a small saucepan with garlic; leave clove in pan. Add wine and lemon juice and place over medium heat.

    Toss cheese with cornstarch in a small bowl. Just as the wine mixture reaches a boil, slowly add cheese to pot, stirring constantly until cheese is melted and smooth.

    Continue stirring another minute, or until thickened slightly. Season with salt and pepper.

    Serve immediately with apple, carrots, and bread.

    Kid-friendly version: Double the recipe and use apple juice instead of wine. Do the dipping for kids under 3; supervise older ones.
