- 4 to 6 slices French bread
- 1 c. milk
- 1 egg
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- pinch of pepper
- 1/2 tsp. sugar
- butter or margarine (for frying)
Directions

1Use bread that is not quite fresh, about 2 days old.

2Cut the French bread into slices about 1/2-inch thick.

3Beat milk, egg, salt, pepper and sugar together in a shallow bowl.

4Heat a large heavy skillet.

5Melt about 2 tablespoons butter or margarine. When fat is hot and sizzling, soak slices of bread in egg-milk mixture. Leave them in liquid until they are wet through, but do not fall apart.

6Fry bread quickly until golden brown.
