  • 1 1/3 c. plain flour
  • 1 c. whole wheat flour
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 2 tsp. baking soda
  • 3/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. each: ground cloves and nutmeg
  • 4 c. finely chopped apples, peeled (add sugar if tart)
  • 1/2 c. soft shortening
  • 2 eggs

Directions

    Combine flour, sugar, salt and spices.

    Mix until blended.

    Add apples, shortening and eggs.

    Beat at medium speed until well blended.

    Pour into a greased and floured 9 x 13-inch pan or 2 layer cake pans.

    Bake in preheated oven at 325° for 45 minutes or until cake springs back when touched.

    The cake does not rise much like a fruit cake.
