Ingredients

  • 3 oz. unsweetened chocolate, finely cut
  • 3/4 c. boiling water
  • 1/2 c. ready to eat bran
  • 1 1/2 c. sifted cake flour
  • 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 2 eggs
  • 3/4 tsp. soda
  • 3/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1/3 c. thick sour milk or buttermilk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla

Directions

    Place chocolate in mixing bowl.

    Add water, stirring until chocolate melts.

    Add bran and set aside to cool.

    Sift flour, baking powder, soda, salt and sugar into cooled mixture.

    Add shortening and beat 2 minutes (200 strokes).

    Add milk, vanilla and eggs.

    Beat 2 minutes.

    Pour into 2 greased 8-inch pans and bake at 350° about 30 minutes.
