German Chocolate Cake

- 1 pkg. German sweet chocolate
- 1/2 c. boiling water
- 1 c. butter or other shortening
- 2 c. sugar
- 4 egg yolks, unbeaten
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. soda
- 2 1/2 c. cake flour
- 1 c. buttermilk
- 3 egg whites
Directions

1Melt chocolate in boiling water and cool.

2Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

3Add egg yolks, one at a time, beating after each addition.

4Add chocolate and vanilla.

5Sift together salt, soda and flour.

6Add alternately with buttermilk to chocolate mixture, beating well after each addition.

7Then beat the batter until it is smooth.

8Beat egg whites until very stiff peaks form.

9Fold into batter.

10Pour into three 8 or 9-inch cake pans, greased.

11Bake at 350° for 30 to 40 minutes or bake in two square 9-inch pans, 40 to 45 minutes.

12Frost with Coconut Pecan Frosting.
