- 1 pkg. German sweet chocolate
- 1/2 c. boiling water
- 1 c. butter, margarine or shortening
- 2 c. sugar
- 4 egg yolks (unbeaten)
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 2 1/2 c. cake flour or 2 1/4 c. all-purpose flour
- 1 c. buttermilk
- 4 egg whites, stiffly beaten
Directions

1Melt chocolate in boiling water.

2Cool.

3Cream butter and sugar until fluffy.

4Add egg yolks, one at a time and beat well after each.

5Add melted chocolate and vanilla.

6Mix well.

7Sift together salt, soda and flour.

8Add alternately with buttermilk to chocolate mixture, beating well.

9Beat until smooth.

10Fold in beaten egg whites.

11Pour into 3 (8 or 9-inch) cake layer pans. Line on bottoms with paper.

12Bake in moderate oven at 350° for 30 to 40 minutes.

13Cool.

14Fill layers and frost top and sides with Coconut-Pecan Filling.
