- 1 1/2 c. sifted flour
- 1 tsp. each: baking soda and ground ginger
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 1/3 c. vegetable shortening
- 1/2 c. sugar
- 1 egg
- 1/2 c. light molasses
- 3/4 c. boiling water
Directions

1Sift together flour, soda, ginger and salt.

2Cream shortening until fluffy.

3Add sugar gradually, beating well.

4Beat in egg; blend with molasses.

5Sift dry ingredients into mixture.

6Beat thoroughly; stir in water.

7Bake in greased and floured 8-inch square pan 40 minutes at 350° or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

8Remove from pan and cool on rack.
