  • 1 1/2 c. sifted flour
  • 1 tsp. each: baking soda and ground ginger
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/3 c. vegetable shortening
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 c. light molasses
  • 3/4 c. boiling water

    Sift together flour, soda, ginger and salt.

    Cream shortening until fluffy.

    Add sugar gradually, beating well.

    Beat in egg; blend with molasses.

    Sift dry ingredients into mixture.

    Beat thoroughly; stir in water.

    Bake in greased and floured 8-inch square pan 40 minutes at 350° or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
