  • 1/2 c. melted shortening
  • 1 1/4 c. molasses
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2 1/2 c. sifted flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. ginger
  • 1/2 tsp. cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 3/4 c. hot water

    Combine shortening and molasses.

    Add egg.

    Stir until well blended.

    Mix and sift dry ingredients and add alternately with the hot water to the molasses mixture.

    Bake in a well-greased 9 x 9 x 2-inch pan at 350° for about 45 minutes.
