- 1/2 c. melted shortening
- 1 1/4 c. molasses
- 1 egg, beaten
- 2 1/2 c. sifted flour
- 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 1 tsp. ginger
- 1/2 tsp. cloves
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 3/4 c. hot water
Directions

1Combine shortening and molasses.

2Add egg.

3Stir until well blended.

4Mix and sift dry ingredients and add alternately with the hot water to the molasses mixture.

5Bake in a well-greased 9 x 9 x 2-inch pan at 350° for about 45 minutes.
