Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2 1/2 c. flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. ginger
  • 1/2 tsp. cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. dark molasses, dissolved in 1 c. hot water

Directions

    Pour molasses and hot water into big mixing bowl.

    Add shortening, sugar and beaten egg to molasses mixture.

    Beat well. Add dry ingredients, a little at a time, mixing well.

    Bake in greased pans, 9 x 11-inches or 2 round pans at 375° until done, usually 30 to 35 minutes.

    Serve warm with whipped topping or ice cream.
