- 20 small onions, peeled
- butter or margarine
- 2 Tbsp. sugar
- 2 Tbsp. flour
- 3/4 c. chicken broth
- 3/4 c. milk
- salt and pepper
- 3/4 c. bread crumbs
Directions

1Cook onions until almost tender.

2Heat 3 tablespoons butter in a skillet.

3Add sugar.

4When dissolved, add onions, a few at a time.

5Brown lightly, turning to glaze evenly.

6Remove to 1 1/2-quart casserole dish.

7Heat 2 tablespoons butter in saucepan. Blend in flour.

8Cook until it bubbles.

9Remove from heat.

10Stir in broth and milk.

11Add salt and pepper.

12Cook one or two minutes, whisking constantly until smooth and thickened.

13Pour sauce over the onions in the casserole dish.

14Heat 2 tablespoons butter in the skillet and add bread crumbs.

15Brown lightly.

16Sprinkle over onions.

17Bake 30 minutes at 350°.
