  • 2 c. sugar
  • 3 c. flour
  • 1 c. butter
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 1 tsp. soda (level)
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon, cloves and allspice
  • 1 c. jam or more as desired
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • red cake coloring

    Cream butter and sugar.

    Add eggs, one at a time; beat.

    Sift dry ingredients.

    Add alternately with buttermilk.

    Add jam.

    Add 3/4 cup boiling water; mix well just before putting into pan. Bake at 350° for 1 hour or longer.
