Light Custard-Like Bread Pudding

  • 4 eggs, beaten
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 2 c. heavy cream
  • 2 c. milk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 2 tsp. lemon zest
  • 1 loaf stale French, brioche or challah bread

Directions

    Trim crust from bread and cut remainder into 2-inch cubes. Beat eggs and sugar in a large bowl until pale yellow, then add next 5 ingredients.

    Add bread cubes and toss, coating well.

    Pour this mixture into a buttered 13 x 9-inch baking dish.

    Bake at 350° until set, about 30 minutes.

    Transfer baking dish to wire rack and allow to cool slightly.

    Ladle Blueberry-Lemon Sauce over top.
