- 1/2 c. shortening
- 1 1/4 c. sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 c. hot water
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1/2 c. cocoa
- 1 1/2 c. flour
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. soda
- 1 tsp. baking powder
Directions

1Cream shortening, add sugar gradually, and cream until fluffy.

2Blend in well beaten eggs, slowly.

3Add hot water to cocoa, and mix until smooth.

4Stir to dissolve completely.

5Sift flour, salt, soda, and baking powder together, and add to cream mixture alternately with hot water and cocoa mixture.

6Blend in vanilla.

7Pour into a 8-inch square pan; bake 30-55 minutes in a moderate oven 320-350°.
