- 8 1/2 c. sifted all-purpose flour
- 1 Tbsp. ground ginger
- 1 tsp. ground cloves
- 1 tsp. ground nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp. ground allspice
- 1 c. soft shortening
- sugar
- salt
- water
- rum
- soda
- molasses
Directions

1Sift together flour, ginger, cloves, nutmeg and allspice.

2Work shortening in a bowl until creamy.

3Add sugar and beat until well blended.

4Combine salt, water and rum; stir to dissolve salt.

5Stir soda into molasses and combine with water mixture.

6Add liquid mixture and sifted dry ingredients alternately to shortening mixture.

7Mix well after each addition.

8Cover and chill overnight. Heat oven to 375°.

9Roll a small portion of dough at a time.

10Place on a cookie sheet and bake.
