- 1 c. firmly packed brown sugar
- 1 c. shortening
- 1 c. molasses
- 1 c. buttermilk
- 2 eggs, beaten
- 1 tsp. soda
- 1 tsp. ground ginger
- dash of salt
- 5 1/2 c. flour
- about 6 1/2 c. apple butter
Directions

1Combine sugar, shortening and molasses; beat until smooth.

2Add buttermilk, eggs, soda, ginger and salt; mix well.

3Add flour, about a cup at a time, beating just until blended after each addition (do not overbeat).

4Divide dough into ten portions and place each on a greased cookie sheet or 10-inch cake pan; pat into a 10-inch circle.

5Bake at 350° for 5 to 7 minutes.

6Remove to cooling rack.

7Stack the layers, spreading about 2/3 cup apple butter between each.
