Ingredients

  • 1 lb. margarine
  • 5 c. sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 c. plus 2 Tbsp. water
  • 1 Tbsp. grated lemon rind (heaping)
  • 1/2 c. molasses
  • pinch of baking powder
  • 3 Tbsp. cinnamon (heaping)
  • 3 Tbsp. cloves (heaping)
  • 2 Tbsp. baking soda
  • 1 Tbsp. grated orange rind (heaping)
  • 1/2 Tbsp. lemon extract
  • 7 c. flour
  • pinch of salt

Directions

    Melt margarine and add sugar, cinnamon and cloves.

    Mix together and cool.

    Add eggs, beat in well by hand.

    Add soda (dissolved in water), orange rind, lemon rind and extract.

    Add molasses.

    Mix together flour, baking powder and salt; then add it slowly into other combined ingredients.

    Pack into waxed paper lined bread pans.

    Refrigerate until it is hard enough to slice in thin slices.

    Sprinkle each slice with sugar and bake in 350° oven for 5 to 7 minutes.
