Ingredients
- 1 lb. navy beans
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 2 to 3 carrots, sliced
- 3 to 4 stalks celery, sliced
- 1/4 c. green pepper, diced
- 1 (8 oz.) can tomato sauce
- 1/8 tsp. dry mustard
- 2 cloves garlic, minced or 1/8 tsp. garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp. black pepper
- 1 ham bone with meat or dice a small piece ham
- 1/4 tsp. baking soda
Directions

1Wash beans, cover with water and soak overnight.

2Drain and rinse.

3Place in 5 to 6-quart pot.

4Add water to 1 1/2 inches above beans.

5Add all other ingredients.

6Bring to boil; adjust burner to simmer.

7Add baking soda.

8Simmer for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Remove 1 cup beans, drained.

9Mash and return to pot.
