Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. dry yeast
  • 1/2 c. lukewarm water
  • 1 c. oatmeal (uncooked)
  • 2 c. boiling water
  • 1/2 c. molasses (mild)
  • 2 Tbsp. shortening
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 5 to 6 c. flour

Directions

    Dissolve yeast in lukewarm water.

    Pour hot water over oatmeal in large bowl.

    Add shortening, salt and molasses.

    Let cool to lukewarm.

    Stir in about 2 cups of the flour.

    Add yeast and mix well.

    Continue to stir in remaining flour, gradually, until dough springs back when pressed with finger.

    Let rise to double the amount.

    Knead down.

    Let rise and form into two loaves.

    Let rise and bake at 325° about 45 minutes.
