Old-Fashioned Beef Stew

Ingredients
- 2 lb. beef chuck, cubed
- 3 Tbsp. shortening
- 1/4 tsp. pepper
- 12 small white onions
- 6 carrots, peeled and cut into chunks
- 1/2 c. cooked peas
- 3 Tbsp. flour
- salt
- 6 c. water
- 2 c. diced, peeled yellow turnips
- 4 medium potatoes, peeled and cut into quarters
Directions

1Dredge meat with flour and brown on all sides in shortening in kettle.

2Add 2 teaspoons salt, pepper and water.

3Bring to boil; simmer, covered, for 1 1/2 hours, or until meat is almost tender. Add remaining ingredients, except peas, and simmer for 45 minutes or until vegetables are tender.

4Season with salt to taste and sprinkle with peas.

5Makes 6 servings.
