Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 egg, well beaten
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1/3 c. molasses
  • 1/2 c. buttermilk
  • 3 1/2 c. all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. allspice
  • 1/2 tsp. cloves
  • dash of nutmeg

    Thoroughly cream together sugar and shortening.

    Add egg, molasses and buttermilk.

    Blend well.

    Sift together dry ingredients and add to creamed mixture.

    Mix thoroughly and add vanilla.

    Chill dough until easily handled.

    Divide dough into 4 equal parts.

    Roll each about 9-inch circles and place in greased 9-inch cake pans in 350° preheated oven for 10 to 15 minutes or until done.
