  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 c. sour milk
  • grated rind of 1 orange
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 c. chopped nuts
  • 1/2 c. diced dates
  • 2 c. flour

    Cream shortening, sugar and rest of ingredients, beating slightly after each addition.

    Add small amounts of flour at a time.

    Beat well.

    Blend in dates and nuts.

    Bake 1 hour.

    While cake is warm, pur over mixture of 1/2 cup sugar and juice of 1 orange.

    Bake in tube pan for 1 hour at 350°.

    Let stand at least 4 hours before eating.
